I have been treating a patient for chronic neck and upper back tension since June 2012. She recently got into a MVA and her existing symptoms have worsened. She would prefer I keep billing her regular health insurance without getting her PIP involved. She is getting chiropractor care under her PIP coverage. Am I legally obligated to disclose the MVA to her health insurance company (by checking the YES box on the HCFA form regarding accident)? The patient’s concern is that it is exacerbation of an existing problem, so does her health insurance even need to know about the MVA. I was hoping you could give me some clarification on this regarding my role and obligations considering the patient’s wishes. Thanks!
